The Hungry Tide won the Crossword Book Prize and his novel, Sea of Poppies, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In 2007 he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest honors, by the Indian president. Since then, he has published IAAL, The Calcutta Chromosome, and The Glass Palace, The Hungry Tide, Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke, Flood of Fire done field work in Cambodia lived in Delhi and written for a number of publications. He published his first novel, The Circle of Reason in 1986, and his second, The Shadow Lines, in 1988. Ghosh has been a journalist and a novelist. ![]() The work he did there resulted in the novel In an Antique Land ( IAAL 1993). ![]() In 1980, he went to Egypt to do field work in the fellaheen village of Lataifa. After graduating from the University of Delhi, he went to Oxford to study Social Anthropology and received a Master of Philosophy and a PhD in 1982.
